Photo-Based Commissions

If you're outside the Portland, OR Metro Area (or just can't make it to a live sitting) I can create a custom oil portrait for you based on photos you send me. These are the same small, illustrative head-and-shoulders portraits I create in live sittings, painted from a reference photo instead of an in-person session.

Timeline

Photo-based commissions are painted in my studio in between my live sitting sessions, so they're queued in the order deposits come in. Once I receive your deposit, I'll send you a short guide on the kind of photos that work best (lighting, angle, resolution) so your portrait turns out well.

Turnaround is typically 2–3 weeks from when I receive usable photos. The painting then takes an additional 2 weeks to dry before it's ready to ship.

Cost & Payment

Small (8-10"): $250
Medium (11-14"): $400
Large (16-20"): $600

A non-refundable $20 deposit is required to reserve your place in the queue, which goes toward purchasing the materials for your painting. The remainder of the payment is due before your painting ships.

A photo-based commission beside its reference: an old snapshot of a child in a pink hat, held next to the finished oil portrait painted from it.
A framed oil portrait of a baby in a gold party hat on a yellow ground, shown next to the photograph it was painted from.
A photograph of a man holding an armful of cut sunflowers on a summer pavement, paired with the oil portrait painted from it.
