Projections Project, 2023
Created thanks to a 3C's Grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC).
This project was the first thing I did after giving birth to my first son and wanting to reconnect with my art practice. It was experimenting with process while helping me reflect on my post-partum experience. The goal was to explore new ways to arrive at reference material for paintings, and I did so by creating three-dimensional, auto-biographical sculptures that were then juxtapozed with meaningful, two-dimensional images.
I started by blocking in the basic shapes of each figure over a wire frame and stand.
I refined the figures, focusing on their contrasting postures.
I created molds of the refined sculptures, and made duplicates.
I experimented, using different clays and waxes to create copies of the sculptures. On the copies I was able to carve finer details and finish off the sculpts.
I projected images over the finished sculptures, creating lots of reference material.
I found images like these to be very evocative.
I created sketches of my favorites as reference material.
I created a painting from one of those reference images.
